Scratchboard Art by Lynn Kibbe
The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps-we must step up the stairs. - Vance Havner
What is Scratchboard Art?
I use professional grade Ampersand Museum Scratchbord Panels which are acid-free and archival. They are tested to last at least 200 years and are made with premium 1/8” hardboard for a warp-resistant panel with patented coatings, and will not tear, crack, or bend. Scratchboard has a smooth, absorbent kaolin clay ground that is evenly coated with India ink. They are then scratched by means of a variety of tools resulting in controlled, crisp, clean lines to create exquisitely detailed white-on-black art. Application of colored ink after scratching can yield an image that appears remarkably lifelike. The finished artwork is sealed with spray fixative and can be framed with (matted) or without glass.
I regularly donate portions of certain sales to worthy individual recipients or animal organizations (most noteably our local SPCA and Appalachian Horse Rescue).
***I am an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA).***

***I am a "juried artisan" through the PA Wilds Artisan Initiative. The project aims to raise the visibility and profitability of the region’s artisans and arts-related businesses in two main ways: by branding high-quality, locally-made artisan products with the “Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds” brand so these products can command a higher price; and helping get more of these items to market by establishing an Artisan Trail and an online presence for the program so artisans can more easily market their products to residents, visitors, design professionals and the like.*** http://www.pawildsresources.org/about-us
You have to love the creative process to be a visual artist. Intrinsic motivation is what keeps me going without any guarantee of profit. I never compromise my art, always giving my customers/ collectors artwork that touches the soul, both theirs and mine. It is always humbling that someone feels so strongly about my creations that they part with their hard earned money. I never know if anyone else will like my work, but hope that what touches me will touch a collector who will pay for the artwork to be part of their collection.
